Functions of the vagus nerve:

  • Regulation of the heart: It helps slow the heart rate.
  • Digestion: Stimulates the production of stomach acid, enzymes and the movement of food through the digestive tract.
  • Respiration: Helps regulate breathing frequency.
  • Relaxation: Promotes relaxation and recovery by activating the body’s “rest-and-digest” response.
  • Inflammatory response: Plays a role in controlling inflammatory responses in the body.

How do you stimulate the vagus nerve?

Stimulating the Nervus Vagus can help to reduce the increase parasympathetic activity , leading to better stress regulation, reduction of anxiety, and an overall sense of well-being. Here are some ways to stimulate the vagus nerve:

1.Deep breathing

This is one of the simplest ways to activate the vagus nerve. This can help slow the heart rate and put the body into a state of relaxation.

Exercise:

  • Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose for 4-5 seconds.
  • Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6-7 seconds.
  • Repeat for a few minutes and do this 3 times a day.

2. Cold training

This involves exposing the body to low temperatures to achieve health benefits. This workout can take different forms, such as:

  • Cold showering: Shower daily or regularly with cold water.
  • Ice bath: Immerse in a bath filled with ice water.
  • Cold air: Exposure to cold environments, such as cold rooms or outdoor activities in cold weather conditions.

Cold exercise can stimulate the activation of the vagus nerve, which leads to a calming effect on the body and helps reduce stress and anxiety.

3. Vocal stimulation

Chanting, humming, or chanting mantras can help stimulate the vagus nerve because this nerve is connected to the vocal cords.

  • Humming and singing causes vibrations in the throat and nasal cavity. These vibrations can cause mechanical stimulation of the vagus nerve, which can promote vagal activity. Humming can also promote the release of endorphins and other positive neurotransmitters, contributing to improved mood and reduction of stress. This indirectly contributes to vagus nerve stimulation.
  • Chanting, especially with elongated sounds such as “Om,” causes deep vibrations that can directly stimulate the vagus nerve. These sound vibrations can increase vagal activity. When chanting is performed in groups, as in many spiritual or religious practices, the social connection and sense of community can promote oxytocin production. Oxytocin has positive effects on vagal tone and promotes a sense of well-being and connection.

"Relaxation begins at the vagus nerve: activate rest, recovery and balance in body and mind."

4. Yoga and Meditation

Yoga and meditation are powerful methods to increase parasympathetic activity and stimulate the vagus nerve.

  • Physical Postures (Asanas): The physical postures in yoga can improve blood circulation and optimize posture, which can indirectly stimulate the vagus nerve. Some postures, such as forward bends, directly stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • Mindfulness and Focus: Yoga requires a high degree of concentration and attention to the present moment. These mindfulness aspects help reduce stress hormones and promote vagus nerve activation.

  • Relaxation (Savasana): The end of a yoga session often includes deep relaxation, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system and improves vagal tone.

  • Mindfulness Meditation: Practicing mindfulness meditation regularly can increase vagus nerve activity. Mindfulness meditation helps reduce stress and anxiety by stimulating the parasympathetic response.

5. Massages

Various massages can be effective in stimulating the Vagus Nerve by activating relaxation points in the body. Here are some massages that are particularly beneficial in activating this nerve:

Neck and Shoulder Massage: The vagus nerve runs down the neck into the chest and abdomen. Massaging the neck and shoulder areas can help relax tense muscles and stimulate the vagus nerve.

Ear massage: The vagus nerve has a branch that runs to the outer ear, known as the auricular branch. Massaging this area can cause direct stimulation of the vagus nerve.

Foot Reflexology: Reflexology is based on the principle that certain points on the feet correspond to organs and nerves in the body, including the vagus nerve.

Abdominal massage: The vagus nerve innervates the intestines and plays a crucial role in the gut-brain axis. Abdominal massages can help stimulate the vagus nerve by promoting relaxation and enhanced bowel movements.

6. Nutrition

Certain foods and herbs can positively or negatively affect vagus nerve activation.

Foods that stimulate the vagus nerve

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for reducing inflammation and supporting the health of nerve cells, including those of the vagus nerve.
  • Probiotics: Foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi, support gut health, which in turn promotes vagus nerve function. A healthy gut microbiome positively influences the vagus nerve by producing neurotransmitters that improve mood and relaxation.
  • Antioxidant-rich Foods: Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, such as berries (blueberries, strawberries), dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale) and nuts (almonds, walnuts), help reduce inflammation in nerves and support overall nerve health.
  • High Quality Proteins: Lean protein sources such as chicken, turkey and legumes provide amino acids necessary for nerve cell regeneration and growth. These proteins contain essential nutrients such as tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, which is involved in mood regulation.

Foods that antagonize stimulation of the vagus nerve

  • Processed Foods: Diet rich in processed foods can be detrimental to the health of the vagus nerve. These foods often contain unhealthy fats, sugars and additives that can cause inflammation and interfere with normal nerve function.

  • Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can negatively affect the vagus nerve by disrupting its function and contributing to inflammation and oxidative stress.

  • Foods with High Sugar: Foods and drinks high in sugar can lead to inflammation and insulin resistance, which can interfere with vagus nerve function and overall nervous system health.
